An annual scholarship of ₦300,000 can help a Nigerian student plan for books, transport and other education costs. In Ghana, support for tuition, accommodation and learning materials can reduce a different kind of financial pressure. Both opportunities are connected with the MTN Foundation, but they are not the same scholarship.
This distinction matters. A student may find an attractive MTN scholarship announcement, begin collecting documents and only later realise that the conditions apply to another country or to a different course. Others may mistake an old announcement for a new application period.
The MTN Foundation Scholarship 2026 application periods in Nigeria and Ghana are closed. This article does not claim that applications have reopened for 2027. Instead, it explains the published 2026 rules, identifies differences between the programmes and gives practical ways to prepare without making assumptions about the next cycle.
You will find examples of eligibility decisions, simple funding calculations, a scholarship comparison, advice for Ghanaian teachers and a checklist you can use when a new official announcement appears. The student situations and budgets are fictional illustrations, not accounts of actual scholarship recipients.
MTN Foundation Scholarship 2026 at a Glance
| Country | Eligible applicants described in 2026 | Published support | Application position on 8 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | Eligible students at public tertiary institutions under the Science and Technology and Blind Students routes; the 2026 medical allocation added 100 places. Top 10 UTME recipients may attend public or private institutions. | ₦300,000 per year, subject to the scholarship conditions | Closed |
| Ghana | Eligible Ghanaian continuing students, vocational and technical learners, and teachers on qualifying study routes | Tuition, accommodation, learning device and reading materials stipend | Closed; deadline was 31 May 2026 |
These are country-specific programmes. They do not establish a single scholarship open to every student in Africa. Nor should the phrase fully funded be used as a blanket description: Nigeria states an annual award amount, while Ghana describes a package with no identical cash value published for every recipient.
What does closed mean for a future applicant?
The Nigerian application form states that submissions are closed, and MTN Ghana published 31 May 2026 as its deadline. Neither establishes a new application opening date in 2027. You can still prepare your academic information, but you should wait for a dated announcement before submitting a form or relying on a deadline.
Hence, suppose you missed the MTN scholarship application, you can also explore other companies that support education in Africa. Nestlé, for example, has offered scholarships and bursaries in Nigeria and South Africa. However, these programmes have different requirements, and the confirmed 2026 application rounds have already closed. Our Nestlé Scholarships in Africa 2026/27 guide explains who qualified, what support was available and what students should check before the next application period.
MTN Foundation Scholarship Nigeria: Awards and the 2026 Medical Allocation
The main MTN Nigeria scholarship programme includes the Science and Technology Scholarship, the Scholarship for Blind Students and the Top 10 UTME Scholarship. MTN also increased the 2026 allocation of new opportunities from 400 to 500, adding 100 places for medical students.
Those 100 additional places are a confirmed feature of 2026, not a promise that the next round will have the same number. You can review the provider’s current description on the MTN Nigeria scholarships page.
Science and Technology Scholarship: which students qualified?
The general Science and Technology Scholarship route covered eligible students taking approved science and technology courses at Nigerian public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Students who had completed their second semester 200 level examinations and were progressing to 300 level could apply, alongside students already at 300 level. MTN’s combined 2026 Science and Technology eligibility page also lists teaching hospitals; the separate conditions for 400 level medical applicants are explained in the medical section below. This does not mean every STEM student at a teaching hospital meets the general route’s rules.
A course title alone was not sufficient. Students also had to check the subject rules, institution type and academic results. A public university student studying a non-qualifying course should not assume they meet the Science and Technology Scholarship conditions simply because they have a high CGPA.
General Science and Technology Scholarship CGPA requirements
| Applicant category | Minimum published academic requirement |
|---|---|
| Public university or college of education STEM student | CGPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or 3.5 on a 5.0 scale |
| Polytechnic applicant entering HND | At least 3.0 CGPA, described as Upper Credit, from OND plus admission to HND |
| Direct Entry STEM applicant with OND | At least 3.0 CGPA, described as Upper Credit, from OND and admission into 300 level or third year at a public university |
Direct Entry is an important exception. Nigerian universities commonly admit eligible Direct Entry students into 200 level, although entry level depends on the university, qualification and course. MTN’s published 2026 scholarship condition for the specified OND Direct Entry applicants is different: it requires admission into 300 level (third year) at a public university. Students admitted to 200 level should ask MTN to clarify their scholarship eligibility instead of assuming ordinary Direct Entry admission satisfies this award’s rule.
Practical example: two engineering students with different CGPAs
Consider Emeka and Tobi, two fictional mechanical engineering students at public universities. Both are studying at 300 level. Emeka has a 3.2 CGPA on a 5.0 scale; Tobi has 3.7 on the same scale.
For their 2026 scholarship category, MTN required at least 3.5 on a 5.0 scale. Emeka therefore falls below the published academic threshold, whereas Tobi meets that particular threshold. Tobi would still have to satisfy the course, institution and other conditions before being considered.
This example matters because a CGPA has little meaning without its grading scale. A result of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and a result of 3.2 on a 5.0 scale should not be treated as interchangeable.
MTN Medical Scholarship Places: Do Not Apply the General STEM Threshold
For 2026, MTN added 100 places for medical students. Its eligibility page includes public universities and teaching hospitals in the medical application context. Medical students who had completed their second semester 300 level examinations and were progressing to 400 level, or who were already at 400 level, could apply. The published minimum result for this medical category was a pass grade or equivalent, rather than the general STEM CGPA threshold.
Practical example: Emeka and Ada
Emeka, the fictional engineering student above, is at 300 level with 3.2 on a 5.0 CGPA scale. He falls short of the general STEM requirement of 3.5 on that scale.
Ada is a fictional 400 level medical student at a public university. She has the pass grade specified in the 2026 medical category. Therefore, Ada meets the published academic level and minimum grade conditions for that route, although other requirements still apply.
It would be incorrect to reject Ada using the 3.5 CGPA threshold applied to Emeka. Equally, Ada’s example is not proof that every medical student will qualify when the next application cycle opens. MTN may change the rules.
MTN Scholarship for Blind Students: Eligibility and the Law Exception
The 2026 Scholarship for Blind Students covered eligible blind students at 200 and 300 level in public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Unlike the Science and Technology route, it was open across courses, rather than being limited to science and technology subjects.
The grade conditions were also different. University and college of education applicants needed a minimum 2.5 CGPA, while the published polytechnic HND route required at least 2.0 from OND plus admission to an HND programme.
Why were blind law students treated differently?
For blind students studying law, MTN’s 2026 page explicitly said only 300 level students could apply. It notes that law is a five year course, but it does not explain why 200 level law students were excluded.
A blind law student at 200 level did not meet the specific 2026 law condition even though the general Blind Students route included 200 level. Students should check whether the law rule changes in the next cycle.
Practical example: choosing the right scholarship category
Ngozi is a fictional blind student studying English at a public university. She is at 200 level and has a 2.8 CGPA. Her course would not fall under the Science and Technology route, but her study level, subject and CGPA could fit the Scholarship for Blind Students, subject to the remaining conditions.
Now imagine a blind law student at 200 level. Even if that student has a strong academic result, the specific 2026 law rule would exclude them. These examples show why the correct category matters more than a general statement that MTN gives scholarships to students with good grades.
MTN Top 10 UTME Scholarship: The Public and Private Institution Exception
The Top 10 UTME Scholarship recognises the ten highest scoring candidates in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as identified by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). MTN publishes an annual award of ₦300,000, starting at 100 level and continuing under the award requirements.
Unlike the general scholarships restricted to public institutions, this automatically awarded scholarship applies regardless of the candidate’s chosen course or whether their Nigerian tertiary institution is public or private.
Is there a separate application for the Top 10 UTME award?
MTN describes automatic qualification based on JAMB’s recognised top ten candidates. It is not an ordinary application route where an agent can add your name for a payment. Students should be careful of anyone claiming that they can influence the official selection.
A student considering a private institution should not infer that private university students qualify for the separate Science and Technology or Blind Students routes. The private institution exception belongs specifically to the Top 10 UTME Scholarship.
MTN Nigeria Scholarship Amount: What ₦300,000 Can Mean
MTN Nigeria publishes ₦300,000 a year for the awards described above. It also states that renewal depends on meeting requirements, including the relevant CGPA and digital learning conditions. That makes the award valuable, but it should not be confused with a monthly salary or unconditional funding until graduation.
A fictional annual budget
Consider a recipient who wishes to plan how an annual ₦300,000 award could help with educational expenses. Here is one illustrative allocation, not an MTN spending instruction or a survey of current Nigerian prices.
| Possible expense | Example allocation |
|---|---|
| Course books and learning materials | ₦65,000 |
| Transport for study activities | ₦80,000 |
| Internet and research data | ₦45,000 |
| Printing and project materials | ₦40,000 |
| Other essential study expenses | ₦70,000 |
| Total | ₦300,000 |
Different students will have different costs. The useful action is to write down your own needs instead of copying this budget. If most of your expense occurs at the start of a semester, you also need to ask when the scholarship is paid.
Does ₦300,000 mean ₦25,000 every month?
No. Dividing ₦300,000 by twelve gives a monthly budgeting equivalent of ₦25,000. It does not establish monthly MTN payments. The actual award payment schedule is a separate matter that recipients should confirm.
What happens if an award is renewed?
Suppose a fictional recipient qualifies for three annual awards, each worth ₦300,000. The three payments would total ₦900,000, assuming the award value stays the same and all renewals are approved. This is a calculation, not a promise that a particular student will receive three payments.
Keep the award terms, check academic progress and find out which digital courses the programme requires. Do not base future rent, tuition or borrowing decisions on renewals that have not yet been confirmed.
MTN Bright Scholarship Ghana 2026: What the Package Covered
The Ghanaian programme is called the MTN Bright Scholarship. Unlike Nigeria’s stated annual cash award, Ghana announced a package covering tuition, accommodation, a laptop or learning device, and a stipend for reading materials.
The provider did not publish one identical cash value for every 2026 scholar. For that reason, describing the Ghana award as a fixed amount in cedis would mislead readers. Its actual value depends on the award arrangement and the relevant costs.
MTN Ghana announced 500 scholarships in 2026, comprising 300 places for students pursuing first degrees in STEM, vocational and technical education and 200 places for teachers continuing their education at public universities. The official Ghana Bright Scholarship announcement also confirmed that the application was entirely free and online.
Ghana application deadline and next cycle
The 2026 Ghana application deadline was 31 May 2026. The 2026 period is therefore closed. Do not treat an old form as evidence that the next cycle is active, and do not predict a new opening date using the previous year’s calendar.
Who Qualified for the MTN Bright Scholarship in Ghana?
MTN Ghana’s 22 April 2026 announcement described Ghanaian continuing undergraduate students at public tertiary institutions, eligible vocational and technical learners, and teachers in the announced allocation. Applicants needed strong academic results, good conduct and financial need.
Ghanaian citizenship was a required eligibility condition for the 2026 Bright Scholarship. Applicants also needed to meet the relevant study, academic, conduct and financial need conditions.
MTN Ghana’s 22 April 2026 announcement stated that applicants must not be subject to disciplinary action. MTN’s Bright Scholarship guidance also instructed people already receiving another educational scholarship not to apply. Applicants should satisfy all these conditions, not only the academic requirements.
What about first year students?
Two MTN Ghana sources use different wording. The Bright Scholarship portal describes first year or continuing students pursuing a first degree at a Ghanaian public tertiary institution, while MTN Ghana’s 22 April 2026 announcement refers specifically to continuing undergraduate students. These are both MTN sources. Their wording does not establish a single unambiguous first year rule for a future competition.
If you are entering your first year, check the terms of the next announced cycle and ask MTN Ghana to clarify your position before preparing an application. Previous programme pages cannot guarantee eligibility for 2027.
Priority courses and encouragement
Published Ghana information gave attention to areas such as ICT, computer science, engineering, artificial intelligence and data analytics. Women and persons with disabilities were encouraged to apply. Encouragement or a priority subject did not replace the citizenship, institution, academic and financial rules.
For example, a student studying an encouraged subject should still check the rule on existing scholarships. The subject alone cannot cancel another compulsory eligibility condition.
MTN Bright Scholarship for Ghanaian Teachers

The 2026 Ghana programme reserved 200 scholarship places for teachers continuing their education at public universities. MTN Ghana’s 29 May 2026 reminder specifically included teachers pursuing first degrees and postgraduate degrees in STEM. It confirmed tuition, accommodation, a stipend for books and a learning device as benefits for the 2026 programme, but did not establish automatic renewal for individual recipients.
What could a teacher include in a motivation letter?
The application guidance described in the 2026 materials asked teacher applicants to explain relevant ICT or STEM work, future goals and expected impact. Teachers were also asked for a CV and a school recommendation. For a later cycle, the new form and instructions must decide the final requirements.
Consider a fictional teacher, Abena, who teaches mathematics and has used simple spreadsheet activities to help pupils interpret tables. If this really happened, she could explain the activity, what pupils struggled with and why further STEM study would help her improve the lessons.
Saying “I will transform education across Ghana” provides little useful evidence. Explaining a genuine classroom example and a realistic next step gives the selection team something it can examine.
Why a teacher’s recommendation matters
If the new application requires a letter from the school, ask early. A useful referee can describe work they have directly observed. Avoid asking a colleague to endorse projects or results that did not happen. The reference should support the applicant’s evidence, not simply repeat positive adjectives.
Are MTN Ghana Scholarship Benefits Renewed Automatically?
The official 2026 announcements confirm what the Ghana scholarship package included, but no clear individual award renewal terms were published in the information reviewed. Receiving support in one year should not be taken as a guarantee of the same benefits in later years.
Before accepting an award, a student should ask whether support lasts one year or more, whether another academic assessment is required and which benefits continue. Keep written confirmation of the conditions.
Nigeria and Ghana MTN Scholarship Benefits Compared
| Question | Nigeria | Ghana |
|---|---|---|
| Does MTN publish a standard annual cash amount? | Yes, ₦300,000 under the described routes | No single value confirmed for every scholar |
| Is a laptop part of the published package? | Not confirmed for every Nigerian recipient | Yes, a learning device is in the published package |
| Is tuition specifically part of the package? | An annual cash award is published, not one standard tuition package | Tuition support is included |
| Is accommodation specified? | No uniform accommodation benefit confirmed | Accommodation support is included |
| Does renewal have published conditions? | Yes, including academic performance and digital learning requirements | Individual award renewal terms not confirmed |
| Are private institutions eligible? | Only for qualifying Top 10 UTME recipients; the general routes require public institutions | 2026 guidance required public tertiary study for first degree applicants; vocational routes have their own conditions |
Practical example: comparing two different benefits
A fictional Nigerian recipient may receive ₦300,000 and plan which study bills need attention first. A Ghanaian recipient may receive direct assistance with tuition and accommodation, alongside learning materials. Neither award should be converted into a single comparable cash total without knowing the exact costs and terms.
When reading any scholarship advert, ask what is paid, who receives it, when it is paid and what remains for you to cover. These questions matter more than labels such as full scholarship or life changing opportunity.
How to Prepare an MTN Scholarship Application Without Guessing
The exact documents requested may change between cycles. Preparing your academic information is useful, but uploading documents or writing an essay before reading the new application form can waste time.
Nigeria: start with the academic facts
Check your institution, course title, level of study, CGPA scale and current result. Polytechnic and OND Direct Entry applicants should check their OND result and relevant admission stage. Blind students should use the requirements of their own scholarship route.
Write each compulsory rule beside your corresponding evidence. For example, someone applying through the public university STEM route should record the institution type, qualifying course, 300 level requirement and the correct CGPA threshold. Mark any uncertain condition as needs confirmation, not as met.
Ghana: prepare the application story and evidence
The 2026 guidance described an online application and a one page letter explaining educational and professional goals and the need for support. Teachers had additional evidence requirements. A future portal may require different files or formatting.
A useful folder might contain your available academic records, admission details, CV if relevant and a working draft of your motivation letter. Only upload information requested by the actual new form.
For a broader process, Scholarmake’s guide to preparing a strong scholarship application explains how to organise evidence, documents and submission checks.
Writing an MTN Scholarship Motivation Letter That Sounds Real
A scholarship statement should help the provider understand the person behind the academic record. Begin with the question the form actually asks. If it asks about financial need, explain the pressure and the practical difference support could make. If it asks about a STEM project, describe your work and what you learned.
A fictional financial need example
Kojo is studying engineering at a Ghanaian public university. In this illustration, his family can contribute to some fees but has difficulty meeting accommodation and materials costs.
A general sentence might read: “My family is poor, and I need money to continue school.” It may be sincere but does not explain the specific effect on his education.
A clearer version would be: “My family helps with my education, but accommodation and required learning materials remain difficult to cover. Support with these costs would help me continue my engineering course with fewer financial interruptions.”
The better version is not more dramatic. It names the difficulty and connects it to the scholarship’s purpose. Applicants should use their own circumstances, not copy a fictional story.
Show what you have done, not only what you hope to do
A teacher might mention an actual classroom activity. A technical student might describe a real laboratory or design project. When possible, identify your role and what changed in your understanding. Avoid invented test scores, imaginary projects and promises of guaranteed future impact.
If you need a method for structuring your examples, Scholarmake’s scholarship personal statement guide provides a separate explanation of evidence, reflection and clear writing.
MTN Scholarship Scam Warning: Check the Country Before Believing a Claim
Scholarship information travels quickly through social media and messaging groups. Unfortunately, an old announcement can easily be presented as a current opportunity, while unfamiliar websites may imitate a genuine scholarship form.
Ghana confirmed that the 2026 application was free
MTN Ghana explicitly stated that the 2026 Bright Scholarship application was free and online only. A demand for a Ghana Bright Scholarship processing fee therefore conflicts with that official statement.
Nigeria: no general application fee policy confirmed
The MTN Nigeria scholarship pages reviewed here did not clearly state an equivalent blanket fee policy. Students should not assume that an individual asking for payment is authorised. Instead, they should verify any unusual payment instruction directly with MTN through its official website before acting.
Warning signs in either country
Be cautious if a person promises to guarantee selection, asks for your password or verification code, requests payment to release a supposed award, or sends you to an unfamiliar domain while claiming to represent MTN. Check the application period, website address and provider contact channel yourself.
Practical example: If a WhatsApp message claims that MTN Foundation Scholarship 2027 has opened but the provider has published no dated announcement, treat the message as unverified. A branded image is not evidence of an active application.
Seven Steps to Prepare for the Next MTN Scholarship Cycle
- Choose the right national programme. Nigeria and Ghana have different rules and application routes.
- Identify your scholarship category. In Nigeria, check the Science and Technology Scholarship, the separate 2026 medical allocation and the Scholarship for Blind Students. The Top 10 UTME award is based on automatic recognition by JAMB, not an ordinary application. In Ghana, identify the relevant student or teacher category.
- Check the current eligibility text. Do not rely on a previous year’s academic level, CGPA requirement or opening date.
- Prepare documents that are genuinely yours. Keep names, course titles and grades consistent across records.
- Plan any required statement. Use real examples and answer the actual question rather than copying a standard essay.
- Apply only through an authorised route. Double check the domain and do not trust promises of guaranteed selection.
- Save proof of submission and read the offer. An application, an award decision and a renewal commitment are three separate things.
A one minute eligibility record
Before beginning a full application, write down these six fields: country, scholarship category, institution type, academic level, grade on its proper scale and current application status. If any compulsory field does not match the published conditions, pause and clarify it before preparing the rest.
This simple exercise can save more time than completing an essay first and checking eligibility later.
Frequently Asked Questions About MTN Foundation Scholarships
Is the MTN Foundation Scholarship 2026 still open?
No. MTN Nigeria’s application form states that submissions are closed, and Ghana’s published 2026 deadline was 31 May 2026. No new 2027 opening date is confirmed in the sources reviewed for this article.
How much does the MTN Scholarship pay in Nigeria?
The published annual award for the described Nigeria routes is ₦300,000. Renewal depends on meeting the relevant conditions.
Are private university students eligible for the MTN Nigeria Scholarship?
The general Science and Technology and Blind Students routes described here require eligible public institutions. The Top 10 UTME route is different: MTN states that it covers qualifying candidates attending either public or private institutions.
Can Direct Entry students at 200 level apply under the published 2026 OND rule?
MTN’s 2026 OND Direct Entry scholarship condition specifically required admission into 300 level or third year at a public university. Although 200 level is a common Direct Entry admission point in Nigeria, students admitted at that level should ask MTN whether they qualify instead of assuming the general university admission practice overrides the scholarship requirement.
Why were blind law students limited to 300 level?
MTN stated that only 300 level blind law students could apply under the 2026 rules. It referred to law as a five year course but did not explain why 200 level students were excluded.
Does MTN Ghana guarantee each recipient a laptop?
The published 2026 Ghana package included a learning device. Individual delivery and award details should be confirmed from the recipient’s offer.
Can Ghanaian teachers apply for postgraduate funding?
MTN Ghana’s 2026 reminder included teachers pursuing first degrees and postgraduate degrees in STEM programmes. Applicants for a future round must check whether that provision remains.
Does the Ghana scholarship automatically renew every year?
Individual award renewal terms were not confirmed in the official 2026 materials reviewed here. Do not assume multi-year support until the award agreement says so.
When will the MTN Foundation Scholarship 2027 open?
A new opening date was not confirmed as of 8 October 2026. Use a dated announcement from the correct country’s MTN Foundation, not predictions based on an old cycle.
Final Advice: Prepare for the MTN Award You Actually Qualify For
The MTN Foundation scholarship programmes can reduce the cost of education, but they require careful reading. Nigeria offers specified annual awards under distinct categories, while Ghana’s Bright Scholarship has a different package and eligibility framework.
For Nigerian students, the public institution rule, academic level, CGPA and correct category all matter. OND Direct Entry applicants under the Science and Technology Scholarship should pay particular attention to the 300 level condition, while blind law students need to recognise the stated exception.
For Ghanaian students and teachers, the important checks include citizenship, study route, academic record, financial need and the conditions of the actual scholarship offer. The confirmed 2026 free application rule also helps readers recognise suspicious payment demands.
Both 2026 application periods are closed. Use the waiting time to prepare genuine records, understand the relevant rules and plan realistic education costs. When the next cycle appears, check its official terms before you apply.
The best scholarship article should help a student decide whether to apply, not simply make an award sound attractive.
Editorial note: Checked on 8 October 2026. All student names, situations and spending examples in this article are fictional. They illustrate decisions and do not represent actual recipients or guaranteed awards. Eligibility, financial support and application dates may change in a future MTN Foundation scholarship cycle.
