Planning an international undergraduate degree in Wales for September 2027? Start with the 2027/28 fee for your chosen course. This guide compares six universities, showing confirmed newer rates beside clearly labelled 2026/27 benchmarks.

Wrexham had the lowest standard fee in this six university comparison for 2026/27 at £11,750. Its 2027/28 undergraduate rate was not verified in the official pages reviewed, so do not carry that figure into a September 2027 budget without confirmation.

This is a shortlist, rather than a complete ranking of Welsh universities. Cardiff University and Swansea are outside the main six university table, although a Swansea course appears later as a comparison. The guide focuses on standard, full time international undergraduate study. Placement years, exchange programmes, distance learning and postgraduate courses need separate comparisons.

Lower Cost Universities in Wales: Fees by Entry Year

The rows follow the lowest standard 2026/27 fee, before scholarships. They do not establish a complete 2027/28 price order. A university’s lowest subject band may not apply to your course.

“Not verified” means this review did not confirm the standard international undergraduate rate for September 2027. It does not mean the university has published no 2027 information. Request the exact fee before comparing offers.

Which Intake Do These University Fees Cover?

For September 2027, use the 2027/28 column. The review confirmed newer rates for Cardiff Met, USW and Aberystwyth. It did not confirm standard September 2027 international undergraduate rates for Wrexham, UWTSD or Bangor.

For a later winter start, USW’s 2027/28 schedule covers February 2028, while Aberystwyth’s 2027/28 schedule covers January 2028. Availability depends on the course. A university publishing a winter fee does not mean every undergraduate degree starts then.

September 2026 figures now serve as reference prices. Even where an existing student’s entry fee stays fixed, a new cohort may pay a different amount. Match the price to when you will begin.

Put these details at the top of your comparison sheet:

• Exact course title and qualification.
• Campus and study format.
• Starting month and year.
• Expected course length, including any foundation or placement year.

If one university has not published your entry year’s fee, mark it as awaiting confirmation. Comparing a confirmed 2027 price with an older 2026 estimate can produce a misleading winner.

How to Choose From the Six Welsh Universities

Wrexham: investigate the lower reference fee

Wrexham makes a useful first enquiry because of its lower 2026/27 reference fee. Its published page says undergraduate fees remain fixed throughout the degree. For September 2027, use that policy only once confirmed for your cohort, alongside the new entry fee.

Begin with course availability. If the degree suits your academic goals, obtain an accommodation quote and check compulsory course expenses. A low fee becomes useful when the course, campus and practical costs fit together. Avoid choosing an unrelated subject simply because its tuition is affordable.

UWTSD: check the course and its teaching location

UWTSD’s £15,600 standard BA, BEng and BSc fee is a 2026/27 benchmark. Request the rate for September 2027. Use the course page to establish where teaching happens before searching for a room.

Ask what students must purchase or arrange for your subject. An equipment list, project requirement or placement journey can affect your budget. Request the same information from your other shortlisted universities so that the comparison includes equivalent costs.

Cardiff Met: build a budget around your campus

Cardiff Met publishes a £16,000 standard undergraduate fee for 2027 entry. Its 2026/27 Health Sciences foundation route costs £17,000 in year one. If you need that route in 2027, request its own fee rather than assuming the standard degree price applies.

Check the campus location before judging a room by its rent. A cheaper room can lose its advantage through commuting costs or awkward travel. USW: distinguish the two entry schedules

USW publishes £17,600 for standard degree and foundation degree courses starting in September 2027 or February 2028. Its older £16,800 and £17,200 subject bands apply to the September 2026 and February 2027 schedule. Select the schedule for your start date.

Next, identify the teaching campus and check where any placements take place. Ask whether you would need a second travel budget during placement periods. Compare the practical arrangements with your alternatives before deciding which offer gives you the better overall fit.

Bangor: match your subject to the fee band

Bangor’s 2026/27 bands run from £18,000 to £21,000. Arts, humanities, education and law sit in the lowest band. Other subjects occupy higher bands. These reference rates do not establish your September 2027 price; request the confirmed course fee.

If your degree has a specialist focus, compare its modules and practical requirements with cheaper alternatives. A higher fee needs a reason that matters to you, such as required subject content or relevant accreditation. Check that reason on the actual course page.

Aberystwyth: compare the package as well as tuition

Aberystwyth publishes £20,400 for humanities and £23,255 for sciences in 2027/28. Its frozen undergraduate entry fee helps with planning subsequent years.

There is also an accommodation award worth checking, discussed below. This makes Aberystwyth a useful example of why tuition order and total cost order can differ. Request a written explanation of any support attached to your offer, including its duration, before treating it as a saving.

Compare the Course Before Comparing the Price

Two degrees with similar names can involve different lengths, optional years and additional expenses. Compare the route you would actually take.

Create a short course checklist:

1. Content: Which compulsory modules support the work or further study you want to pursue?
2. Duration: Is this a standard degree, or does your offer include a foundation year?
3. Professional recognition: If your career requires accreditation, does the exact course hold it?
4. Practical costs: What equipment, travel, checks or fieldwork must students pay for?
5. Placement arrangements: Is a placement compulsory, optional or dependent on securing an opportunity?

A foundation route may make admission possible, but the extra year also needs housing and living costs. Likewise, a reduced placement year fee should not stand in for the ordinary teaching year fee.

Give each shortlisted course a sentence explaining why you want it. If you cannot identify a useful academic reason, reconsider whether it belongs on your list. The aim is an affordable degree that serves a clear purpose.

Should You Look Beyond This Wales Shortlist?

Yes, particularly when another university offers a better course match. The shortlist helps you begin a search; it does not settle every comparison.

For example, Swansea’s Creative Writing and English Literature BA lists £20,250 for international students starting in September 2027. That is £150 below Aberystwyth’s 2027/28 humanities rate. For September 2026, the Swansea course lists £19,300, which is £110 above Aberystwyth’s older humanities rate.

These are prices for one course. They should not become a university wide figure. Nevertheless, the example shows why a small tuition difference deserves a closer look at course content, housing and confirmed support.

Keep your initial search broad enough to find suitable courses, then narrow it to two or three offers that you can investigate properly. A long list of starting fees provides less help than a short list with complete, comparable figures.

Student Accommodation in Wales: Compare Actual Quotes

Use a room rate as a benchmark

Wrexham’s student accommodation page lists 2026/27 single ensuite rooms at £132.50 a week and Single Plus ensuite rooms at £140 a week, with bills included. Its standard contract runs from 18 September 2026 to 26 June 2027.

Those dates cover about 40 weeks. The 39 week figure in the award section belongs to Aberystwyth’s accommodation support, not Wrexham’s contract. Ask for the full contract charge and exact dates rather than applying one university’s week count to another.

For September 2027, request the new room rate and contract dates. Confirm availability, the payment schedule and any extra charge for arriving early or staying through summer.

Use the same approach for each university. You need a room that you can actually book, for the period you need, rather than a low starting rate for an unavailable room.

Make accommodation quotes comparable

Write down these details beside every quote:

• Total rent for the stated dates.
• Included bills and any charges paid separately.
• Deposit, advance rent and payment deadlines.
• Campus travel costs.
• Accommodation needed outside the contract.

A university room contract and a 12 month tenancy may cover different periods. Compare their full charges, then add any uncovered weeks separately. Do not add temporary accommodation for dates already covered by your main tenancy.

For shared private housing, ask what happens if another occupant leaves or does not pay. Have the contract checked if the wording is unclear. The cheapest advertised room is useful only when you understand the financial commitment it creates.

When Higher Tuition Can Mean a Lower Total Cost

A fictional comparison with the same budget period

Consider two invented offers. Both accommodation figures cover 12 months and include bills. The ordinary living and course costs are assumptions for this illustration, not recommended spending targets or university estimates.

Offer B charges £800 more in tuition but saves £1,500 on accommodation. Its subtotal is therefore £700 lower.

This is a partial comparison. Visa charges, the full immigration health surcharge, flights, refundable deposits and a reserve still need separate entries. If those differ between the offers, add them before reaching a decision.

Find the saving needed to offset higher tuition

Divide the tuition difference by the number of months in your budget. In this example, £800 divided by 12 is approximately £66.67 a month.

If the higher tuition option saves more than £66.67 each month through accommodation and travel, it can cost less overall, assuming the other costs remain equal.

This calculation gives you a useful question when viewing rooms: how much must housing save to justify the tuition difference? Use a consistent period and real quotes. Small weekly differences become meaningful when you total them across the contract.

Check the Cost of the Whole Degree

Fixed fees help, but living costs still need a plan

Aberystwyth is the only university in this comparison for which this review confirmed both a 2027/28 undergraduate fee and a published fixed fee policy.

For a standard three year humanities degree at Aberystwyth’s published 2027/28 entry fee, tuition alone totals £20,400 × 3 = £61,200, using its policy of freezing undergraduate fees at the entry rate.

For a standard three year science degree, the equivalent 2027/28 tuition calculation is £23,255 × 3 = £69,765.

This is a tuition calculation, rather than a complete degree budget. Add living and course costs, then apply only confirmed support. Wrexham’s September 2027 total remains unconfirmed because this review did not verify its new entry fee and the policy for that cohort.

USW says it may revise fees in subsequent academic years. Swansea states that international undergraduate fees increase by 3 per cent in later years. For each offer, ask which policy applies to your entry cohort and whether a foundation or placement year changes the calculation.

Model an increase without treating it as a forecast

Here is a fictional three year tuition model starting at £18,000:

The difference is £1,636.20. This model is a planning exercise, not a prediction for a particular university.

Alongside tuition, prepare a separate living budget for each year. A fixed course fee does not freeze your rent, food or travel costs. Record uncertainty openly instead of presenting one precise degree total built from several unknown prices.

Scholarships and Accommodation Awards Can Change the Result

Aberystwyth Global Citizens Scholarship for 2027 Entry

Aberystwyth University offers the Global Citizens Scholarship to eligible new international students beginning their studies in 2027/28. For undergraduate students, the scholarship provides an annual tuition fee discount of £3,000 for humanities courses or £4,500 for science courses.

The discount continues for the standard duration of the degree, provided students maintain satisfactory academic progress and retain their international fee-paying status.

Important: Aberystwyth’s official science fees do not currently agree.

The university’s main Global Citizens Scholarship page lists science tuition at £23,555, leaving £19,055 after the scholarship. However, its undergraduate tuition fees page and another official scholarship page list £23,255, leaving £18,755 after the same discount.

This £300 difference should be clarified directly with Aberystwyth before applicants use either figure in their financial plans.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be new international fee-paying students, meet the academic requirements for an eligible programme, receive an offer and apply for their course by 1 August.

No separate scholarship application is required. Aberystwyth automatically assesses eligible applicants through their course applications.

The scholarship excludes certain programmes, including Veterinary Science and Nursing, as well as distance learning and students receiving external scholarship funding.

Can students combine the scholarship with free accommodation?

Yes. Eligible students can combine the Global Citizens Scholarship with the International Accommodation Award. For a standard three-year bachelor’s degree, the accommodation award provides 39 weeks of free university accommodation during the first year, subject to its conditions and room availability. Students must budget separately for summer accommodation and subsequent years.

Aberystwyth also allows the Global Citizens Scholarship to be combined with one of its Family, AberGrad or Caru Aber awards where the applicant meets the separate eligibility requirements.

Before accepting an offer, students should ask the university to confirm their annual tuition after the scholarship, accommodation entitlement and the conditions attached to both awards.

Check Aberystwyth’s first year housing support

Aberystwyth’s International Accommodation Award, checked on 4 October 2026, describes free allocated university accommodation for eligible students on a standard three year bachelor’s programme during their first 39 weeks, subject to availability and the award conditions. Utilities and WiFi are included.

Aberystwyth’s September 2027 tuition information also mentions the award. Eligibility and benefits vary by study route, so read the full eligibility and award terms for your programme. Before deducting housing costs, confirm your eligibility, allocated room, covered dates and any charges in writing.

Budget separately for summer housing and years two and three. BSc Nursing students and students bringing dependants are ineligible under the published terms. The award cannot be exchanged for cash or used to reduce tuition.

Check the course and accommodation application deadlines for your intake.

Count each award in the right part of your budget

Separate tuition discounts, accommodation support and cash awards. They solve different problems.

• A tuition discount reduces the course fee you must pay.
• A room award reduces the accommodation cost it specifically covers.
• A cash award helps only when its payment date and permitted use match your needs.

Avoid deducting the same award twice. If your offer already shows the fee after a discount, use that net amount without subtracting the scholarship again.

Keep unconfirmed scholarship funding outside your main budget and show it as a separate possible improvement. Only deduct scholarships or tuition discounts after the university has confirmed your eligibility and the amount awarded.

Build Your First Year University Budget

Separate expected spending from cash you must have available

Start with the exact offer fee, then add costs for the period you need to cover. Give every estimate a source: an offer, room quote, course list or clearly labelled assumption.

The last two rows help you identify the cash you need. A refundable deposit is money temporarily tied up, while a reserve remains available unless you use it. Keeping them separate makes the budget easier to explain.

Keep the calculation easy to audit

If a number looks unexpectedly low, check whether it excludes bills, summer housing or a compulsory course item. If it looks high, check whether you counted a deposit twice.

Add a date beside each quote. This lets you update the few figures that have changed without rebuilding the entire comparison. Save the supporting documents together so you can trace each important amount when an offer arrives.

Student Visa Costs and Proof of Funds for Wales

Maintenance evidence is different from an application charge

As of 4 October 2026, Student visa money guidance says applicants studying outside London normally need £1,171 a month for up to nine months: a maximum of £10,539 for maintenance. Wales uses the outside London figure.

You also normally need the first academic year’s course fees shown on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS. The rules include exceptions. Where the holding rule applies, funds must remain available for 28 consecutive days, with that period ending within 31 days of the application.

Maintenance evidence shows access to money for living costs. It is not a separate payment to the government. If your living budget already includes rent, food and travel, adding another £10,539 as a charge would double count those funds.

Check how paid fees and confirmed sponsorship appear in your CAS and supporting evidence. Your household budget and your visa evidence check serve related but different purposes.

Budget for the charges you actually pay

As of 4 October 2026, the Student visa application fee is £558 for an application from outside the UK. The student immigration health surcharge rate is £776 per visa year as of the same date.

The total health surcharge depends on the permission period and can include time beyond the course itself. Use the amount calculated for your application rather than assuming that three years of study always means exactly three years of surcharge.

You pay the health surcharge during the visa application. Your first year cash plan therefore needs the full application amount. These figures may change before a September 2027 application, so recheck the official fees and financial requirements when preparing yours.

Check When Your Money Needs to Be Ready

Deposits can change timing without increasing tuition

Imagine a fictional offer with £16,000 annual tuition and a £4,000 deposit that the written terms credit towards tuition. The remaining tuition balance is £12,000. The tuition total stays £16,000; adding the deposit on top would incorrectly produce £20,000.

Check your own university’s terms for the credit, refund conditions and payment deadline. Do not assume a deposit is refundable because another institution handles it that way.

A refundable room deposit can still create a cash problem if it falls due alongside flights and visa charges. Annual affordability and having enough money on a particular date are separate checks.

Create a simple payment calendar

Compare these dates with when your family or sponsor can send money. If funding arrives after a payment deadline, contact the university before relying on a different schedule. Get any agreed arrangement in writing.

Test Your Budget Before Accepting an Offer

Check what could remove a small saving

Return to the fictional example where Offer B saved £700. An overlooked compulsory expense of £900 would reverse the result. This is why complete quotes matter more than neat rankings.

Test three questions:

• Can I afford the offer if an unconfirmed scholarship does not arrive?
• What happens if the room I priced is unavailable?
• Is there enough money for the next year, when first year support ends?

Mark unresolved items clearly. You can compare confirmed costs now while asking for the information needed to settle the remaining difference.

Plan around funds you can access

If your family sends money from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or another country, transfer charges and exchange rate changes belong in the plan. Ask what they must send to deliver the required pounds after fees. Keep the quote date and allow for movement before the payment falls due.

Treat possible earnings cautiously. A job you have not secured cannot reliably pay a deposit due before arrival. Build the essential budget around confirmed funds, then decide how any later earnings would help.

Where you are bringing family, replace the single student assumptions with your household’s costs and check that any award allows your circumstances. A cheaper room or individual accommodation benefit may not suit a family’s housing needs.

Send each shortlisted university a focused request:

I am comparing offers for [course] starting in [month and year]. Please confirm the annual international tuition fee, the policy for later years, compulsory additional course costs, deposit terms and payment dates. Please also confirm any award attached to my offer and whether it continues after year one. For accommodation, I need the full charge for [dates], included bills and the initial payment required.

Add your applicant number where available. A precise request gives the university a clearer question to answer and makes its response easier to use alongside your other offers.

Make the decision from a completed comparison

Keep three columns in your final shortlist: academic fit, expected spending and payment timing. An offer needs to work across all three.

Wrexham’s lower reference fee makes it worth investigating, but this review does not establish the cheapest university for September 2027. Make your final comparison with confirmed fees for that entry year, accommodation for the same period and funding agreed in writing.
